The REACH Programme is a seven-year, £15m programme funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID). This project, led by the University of Oxford, involves a research consortium of global leaders in water science, policy and practice. It aims to improve water security for 5 million poor people in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia by 2022. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an ambitious research programme and global science-practitioner partnership working to deliver significant benefits for people living in poverty.
Reporting to Professor Richard Washington, the post holder will play a key role in the delivery of the climate science research element of the REACH programme, involving close collaboration with interdisciplinary research staff linking climate and hydrological analysis in a risk-based framework of water security in Kenya and Ethiopia. The key responsibility of the postholder will be to undertake research to contribute to improved understanding of regional climate process dynamics in Africa, with particular focus on teleconnections associated with ocean-atmosphere interaction thought to drive floods and droughts over East Africa. You will disseminate REACH research findings by presenting results at conferences, participating in workshops and representing REACH at external seminars or meetings. The role may involve overseas travel.
The successful candidate must have a PhD or have a PhD submitted (at time of job interview) in a relevant subject and proven research skills in climate science including expertise of climate dynamics in the tropics/Africa. You will have experience in working with complex numerical model simulations and large datasets and programming skills. A good research and publication record, judged by the candidate’s career stage is essential.
This is a full-time post for 2 years in the first instance.
